Operation Youth Quake Needs about $ 10,000 US dollars Operation Youth Quake C/O Lennox Abraham, Director P.O. Box 425 Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica West Indies
Operation Youth Quake is an established non-profit, non-government location for troubled and disadvantaged youth to basically stay out of trouble and learn some life skills. Crime in the Eastern Caribbean is high and expanding rapidly in Dominica. Lack of parental guidance and foreign influences on the economy are partly to blame. Youth are particularly suseptable and need a place to keep out of trouble and learn self-supporting life skills. Currently, there about 40 children of elementary school ages that come to the center for activities and food, especially during the summer. A few children are allowed to stay at the site for various reasons including avoiding abuse or for lack of any housing. Farm Expansion OYQ property is partially cultivated but only 20 percent effective due to a large amount of boulders cluttering the land and making it unpractical for cultivation. Bouldozer rental and new plants are needed for the farm to feed the children and as a means for income for the organization from crop sales. Animal Husbandry Expansion OYQ has a successful chicken project as part of an Animal Husbandry program. To expand the program effectiveness of teaching children new life skills, a dehabilitated structure needs to be renovated to house goats and sheep. It will provide more life skills for the children and offset food costs. Chicken Project COMPLETE A chicken pen and coop has been built and houses 100 chickens. The project provides a means for children to learn farming skills, responsibility, provides nutrition, and a means for them to learn to sell eggs and meat and make their own income. Unfortunately, theives are so despirate that they cut through fences and chicken wire and steal chickens and eggs. A basic outdoor security system is needed to thwart the thieves and save the program. - THANK YOU - THE SECURITY SUSTEM HAS NOW BEEN FULLY FUNDED BY YOUR DONATIONS |

The Social Centre, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, has been operating as a registered company in the Commonwealth of Dominica since 1974. It actually developed in 1950 out of the initiatives of a group of local women, brought together by a highly motivated Roman Catholic Nun named Sister Alicia De Tremmerie. At the time, they had organized themselves into a group that is presently known nationally as the Social League and was the first womens group in Dominica. As a company, the Social Centre caters to the needs of underprivileged individuals and families island wide as it assists them in improving their socio-economic status. Computer Center Renovation Currently, funding has been made available for several computer systems by the Japanese Embassy in Trindad. Renovation of the building to house the computers, however, is inadaquate. Funding is urgently needed for basic repairs to house the computers before the deadline or the Social Center runs the risk of losing computer funding. Ultimately, the computers will be used as part of a more modern skills-for-life program. Funders are now pouring their money into Grenada to repair damage from hurricane Ivan so this project is completely dependant on you ! On line tax deductable contributions can be made through the www.peacecorps.gov website. Library Expansion There is a need for either funding or library book donation to fill an elementary and preschool library. Wood Craft Shop Expansion URGENT NEED There is an urgent need for funding to expand a wood craft shop to help promote real-life skills for teenagers. A catalog of existing craft products is pending. This project will go a long ways to promoting the Adolescent Skills Training Program and supporting the future of disadvantaged children. Food Security Project URGENT NEED As part of a food dehydration project linked to the Home Economics class, this project will also provide a means of self aquired income for the Centre. It will also be used as a model for the entire country to follow to improve their economy. |

Dominica Planned Parenthood Association Dominica Planned Parenthood Association Needs about $ 5,000 US dollars Computer Learning Center COMPLETE Funding for this project has just been received by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives The Youth Advocacy Movement (YAM) depend on gaining education on new health information to relay to others in the community. They also depend on improving their skills as youth-to-youth counselors. Currently, both education and practice come from the new Family Life Educator (FLE) from DPPA, the non-government organization funding the YAM youth branch. A clinic computer is currently unavailable to the members as well as the FLE to upgrade their skills and provide educational paraphanelia to those they councel. Learning Resource Center Funding for this project has just been approved by the US Ambassador in Barbados but not received A Learning Resource Center has been proposed to provide such assistance to the YAM as well as provide a means to attract new and existing clients to additional educational services offered by DPPA. The resulting increase of clients for the new service would result in an increase of public health knowledge as well as income generation from walk-in clients who are made aware of the existing products and services offered by DPPA. Additional funding is required to purchase the materials needed for project implementation and therafter would only require minor funding for printer paper and ink since internet access has already been connected at the DPPA clinic. Income generated as a result of the project will be used to offset the minor continuous costs as well as support other YAM activities. Start-up funding is currently being sought. |
